I'm an artist whose primary influence comes directly from music and pop culture; I'm also a professional concert photographer. I love capturing the live show in the moment. I'm a passionate user of apple products: macbook pro, iphone, ipod...digital artist/graphic designer/fine artist/photographer and video creator whose got a penchant for humorous content! If you can't laugh at life from time to time, then I wish you best of luck in making it through! I'm generally a nice person with a crazy, silly, offbeat sense of humor. I have a beautiful, intelligent son who I love with all my heart and soul. I'm a very private person as well though, and tend not to go into personal life. Others tend really like me or hate me, ironically enough for the same reasons Okay, that's enough about me I suppose.

Happy first post of 2012! It's been a moment, and while I meant to blog over the holidays, it rarely happens on account of it basically being the chaos of the season. However, I'm proud to announce the display of my first art show group exhibition coming this friday, January 20th. This exhibition is featuring my first series of the My Chemical Romance/Danger Days inspired "Contamination Series". The exhibition, entitled "All's Well That Continues Well", will be held at the Gallery Godo in Glendale, California.

The Contamination Series features 7 original pen/ink and prismacolor illustrations by yours truly inspired by the world of the Killjoys featured within the "Danger Days" album/universal concept. Mainly these illustrations were taken inspired by moments in their music videos from the album, Sing and Na Na Na. My mission was not only to preserve the memory of this era but to highlight some of the intensity of it and specific moments in their own glory. This wasn't just to give it the whole "comic book feeling" to it and show the inspiration this band has as artists on me; it's also because I believe right now as a whole the fans may be suffering from a form of post-tour depression. It's easy to do when you come down from the high of seeing a band you're so passionate and supportive of and be in kind of a funk. These pieces will be for sale and a generous portion of the proceeds will go to charity. So here's to you, My Chemical Romance, the fans, and to those who've been supportive of my work through all of this. For more art updates, like my art page on facebook.

The gallery exhibition opens Friday, January 20th, 2012. Opening night reception is from 7:30 - 11:30 pm. The exhibition is open to the public during gallery hours until February 3rd. The following pieces will be on display.

The Art of Rock & Comedy: Puscifer live at the Peabody Opera House in St. Louis!

Shrouded in the shadows with a desert road background setting the mood, frontman of Puscifer Maynard James Keenan (also of Tool and A Perfect Circle) welcomed the audience to the Puscifer show Saturday evening at St.Louis' beautiful Peabody Opera House. Opening with a montage of a metal trailer, an LCD screen, and lawn chairs, he spoke the words that set the tone of the show: "The desert is a beautiful and dangerous place. A place where you can find yourself or lose yourself." I thought that was quite true and profound.

Like any solid performing artist, Puscifer is unlike Maynard's two bands he fronts. The show in itself is a performance of art rock filtered through hillbilly hell comedy. The tour, appropriately named, "The Conditions of My Parole", shows clips of both him and frontwoman Carina Round (who is amazing) dressed up in redneck attire talking about politicians, going to court, and what the aliens listen to (to which one of Maynard's characters said "The good aliens listen to Christina, Britney, and the Glee soundtrack. The bad aliens listen to Tool."). It makes for quite an entertaining piece when mixed in with their unique, art rock sound and backdrops featuring the desert, the ocean, lightning, and ambient LCD designs. It's like watching a play and a concert wrapped in one package. I found myself entranced and enchanted with the lights, the backdrops, and the vocals. This is a show you don't want to miss, and regardless of where you are seated, you will get more than your money's worth.

While it wasn't ideal for photography, I did the best I could in getting some decent telephoto lens shots. There was no photo pit, and we were instructed to shoot from one side of the stage in between people's heads. Not ideal, but at least I came home with a handful of shots that were workable. If only I could've shown you the beauty of the performance throughout the night. I suppose you'll have to go and experience it for yourself.

Attention, Attention...: A Photographic Tribute Blog of The Academy Is...

Two years ago (yes, I'm a late bloomer), I discovered how truly awesome The Academy Is...were thanks to a friend. I'm always looking and keeping my eyes are ears open for great bands to listen to and to photograph. These guys were both. They were some of the most energetic bands to shoot and I'm so happy I was there to capture some memories of the past couple of years.

I first shot The Academy Is... in March of 2009 at a tiny little club in St. Louis called The Fubar on their Snakes & Suits tour. There were no song limits and while I was sandwiched in between people after the show to get an autograph as a favor to a friend, I was pleasantly surprised at how approachable and down to earth they are. I had a brief conversation about Bob Dylan and their t-shirts. Little did I know that I'd come to photograph them 3 more times in the coming year and a half, and what an impression they made on me through their performances and their kindness.

The Academy Is @ Dupage County Fair

In July of 2009, they played the Dupage County fair in the quiet suburb of Chicago known as Wheaton. It wasn't your typical concert setting. It was a fair complete with funnel cakes, games, and probably horse feces somewhere. Then there was their stage and trailers. When I arrived, the "will call" area didn't have my tickets and I was being tossed back and forth between 2 ticket stands until a security guard offered to figure out the situation. When he spoke to the band, they let me come and photograph them even though the situation with the photo pass was all mixed up. I'll never forget that, and that meant a lot considering I had driven 5 hours from St. Louis. I stuck my head in and thanked them, and while I'm not big on autographs or having my photo taken with bands that I meet, I suggested for them to strike a pose, and this was the end result:

 Beckett & The Butcher

Unfortunately, the concert was canceled after 4 songs due to an electrical storm that fired up shortly after they went on. Even though we were all bummed, including themselves, that it was cut short, I got some of the best shots of them that night, in my opinion. It wouldn't be the last time but that night was full of positivity despite the odds.

William Beckett live @ Reggie's Rock Club

In December of 2009, it was only appropriate to close out the decade with going to see William Beckett's acoustic show at Reggie's Rock Club in Chicago. That was the first time I used my telephoto lens to shoot from all different angles, and it was awesome to hear such songs as Winter Passing, The Fever, Classifieds, and his acoustic cover of Alkaline Trio's Radio. One of the highlights of the evening was when Danny Stevens of The Audition came onstage and brought a bottle of Jack Daniel's with him. I remember William taking a swig and making a comment about how it was his "Lil' Jon" moment "getting crunk". Hilarious. I'm glad I captured that moment in time for you to see. If only it had been caught on tape...

The Academy Is..."Almost Here" 5th Anniversary Show @ The Metro

Unknowingly, the last time I'd ever shoot The Academy Is... was at their 5th Anniversary show of "Almost Here" at The Metro in their native Chicago. The energy was tremendous, and hearing the album being played chronologically was amazing. They were never short of fantastic when it came to their live shows. It came as a complete but pleasant surprise that they linked my photos on their official website home page. I never got to say thank you for that. It meant a lot. How odd is it that it was their anniversary show and the last time I'd ever see them live or photograph them as a band live? Strange but possibly not. I don't believe in pure coincidence. Everything happens for a reason.

While I'm truly saddened by their break up, I'm also very interested in seeing what musical route the members will take now. I'm very happy I have the memories that I do, and it's true what they said in their official announcement: they made their mark, and they made their mark in my book as well, both as a music lover and a photographer. I want to give a special personal thanks to the band for sharing their talents with the world and letting me capture their greatness through my lenses. Your generosity and vision will never be forgotten, and I know I speak for their fan base as well when I say that. We'll be waiting to hear your future musical endeavors and (hopefully) tours. If that happens, I'll be there with a camera and a smile...Thank you again, TAI.

Sincerely, Jane

Now time for TAI picture spam! Enjoy!

Thnks Fr The Mmrs!: MCR Tour Blogger & Photography wrap up for Kansas City

As I write this, it's September 11th, 2011. I woke up at approximately 9:02 am today, and I realized that it was at this exact same time 10 years ago today that the second plane crashed into the World Trade Center. It was the day that changed everyone, as if it were the day the earth stood still. I also realized as I lay there that I'd be publishing photos and writing this very blog about the band that was born from the September 11th attacks. If I had a time machine and my 22 year old former self from a decade ago would've known I'd be photographing the best band in the world spawned from the events that day, she would laugh and say the only camera she could operate was a Kodak FunSaver, much less know who My Chemical Romance are. Funny how the universe works and things feel as if they're coming full circle.

I've been blessed to see MCR in multiple cities over the years. More recently in the last year, I've been blessed to have photographed them now for 5 different shows. Each show, not to mention the vibe of the crowd, are always a unique experience. I had shot and watched the show in my native city of St. Louis on the this tour, and I knew that would be a hard show to beat in terms of the shared experience between band and the fans. I'll do my best not to make comparisons between these shows. However, few things make me happier and more proud than looking out as a sea of fans pump their fists into the air and dancing along with this band. That's exactly what happened not long after MCR came out. I photographed the 2 opening songs, Na Na Na & I'm Not OK, and ventured out into the crowd to shoot the Planetary (GO!) balloons filled with confetti. Although that would've made for some incredible shots from the barricade, it's always fun to put down the camera and dance to that song. I mean, let's face it, how can you not dance to that song with all its energy?!

Even though we were a day early on Mikey's 31st birthday, it was nice to see that Carrie Patton of the MCRmy in the MO/KS district made an 8 foot banner for the occasion. This banner was also supposed to include a recent illustration I made of the 2 brothers fighting draculoids. However, it just didn't work out, but it's the thought that counts, right? According to what Carrie witnessed, it seemed as though the guys kept looking at the banner throughout the show, which is always awesome to know when your message is well received.

It doesn't take anything to warm up a MCR show at all, neither for fans or the band. After a few songs it was already clear that the band were pumped to give it their all to the crowd, and likewise. While I believe there were more Blink fans there were MCR fans, the fans that were there specifically to see MCR didn't shy away and were quite passionate. The band seemed to really be having fun and later Gerard claimed it was one of his favorite shows of the tours, and "I don't bullshit. I'm having fun!"

I'm not sure if it's the general lack of creative outlets in the midwest (specifically St. Louis and Kansas City) or what, but the fans share a specific passion and enthusiasm for MCR and that love is shown during their shows. So enthusiastic, in fact, that at one point after an exceptionally intense performance of "Helena" & "Give 'Em Hell, Kid" that Gerard called the crowd "a bunch of animals" and ordered on the count of 3 for everyone in GA to back up since the barricade was about to break (and later did which could have been a lot more dangerous than it turned out as security put up thick, wooden braces). Ironically, this incident occurred before "Teenagers". Self fulfilling prophecy, perhaps? Or was it just getting a bit overzealous as usual? Please kids, remember to be safe and pick your fellow fan up if they fall. You don't need me to remind you of this!

"Only Hope" never loses its power, even after the 4th time you've heard it live. Just as "The Kids From Yesterday" never ceases to amaze me with all its messages of looking back and hope for the future, so does "Only Hope". They both generate the power to deliver these powerful messages while still keeping the crowd jumping and dancing. Every time I hear these songs live, I feel like a cheerleader for this band on the sidelines as I dance & sing along (plus it is fitting seeing as I was the former chubby outcast growing up). It's a certain enthusiasm and pride while watching the band having a great time and the fans interacting with them and feeling the energy as well. There are no words to describe that kind of happiness.

One of the highlights of the evening I must say, were when they performed "S/C/A/R/E/C/R/O/W". "Cub scouts and nuclear war," Gerard said randomly "Those all kill people. This song is called S/C/A/R/E/C/R/O/W." The crowd went nuts. This was the first time I'd heard it live in person myself, having been excited when seeing it played live at Reading a few weeks before on youtube. The wave of hands were all in sync as all the fans sang every word and the guys gave 110% of their energy during the song's height. There's a specific magic to hearing that song live when its capping the ending of the set before closing with the intimacy of "Cancer". The set was a well conducted mixture of old and newer material.

I'd like to make one last note that I feel is important. As Gerard mentioned they had the "unfortunate incident" with regards to their former drummer, he wanted to let us know that they didn't want to cancel one date even if there were only one or two of us in the audience that came to see them. I think that's rather noble and dedicated of them, and I have to say I'm highly impressed with Jarrod Alexander's performance with the band. He meshed well and if I were the casual fan, I wouldn't have even known. It's like the band never missed a beat (no pun intended). One last note: As I saw just a brief moment of the soundcheck, it sounded unrecognizable. Possibly practicing on new material in the works? One can hope!

As both fan and photographer, I have to say I'm not ready for that to be the last show I see on this tour. I can say for sure, however, that in the future I will be going to their shows for many years to come. They are the best band in the world, both to see live and to photograph, and I'll keep shooting them as long as they allow me to. They have inspired me creatively in many ways, brought us all a sense of hope and peace to our chaotic lives, and I'm excited to see what the next evolution of them will be. I love how they keep peeling layers and revealing new and different reinventions of themselves and their music. I can't wait to see what's next. Whatever the future holds for this band, I can guarantee I'll be there on the next tour in multiple cities, with a smile and camera in tow. MCR, Thank you for giving me some of the most amazing experiences of my life from this past year, and for everything else.

When it comes to concerts, as both a photographer and a fan, I've seen and heard enough to know when you come across a phenomenal band. I live for capturing the moments on my camera that makes the show a memorable night, and living to tell about the experience of it.

Since I've been shooting shows for almost 3 years, I've come across a lot of great bands I've photographed. However, every once in a while, a band comes a long and blows the competition away. Such is the case with MCR, as I've been to several of their shows in 4 different cities and photographed them in 3 of those cities (photos included in this post are ones I have taken at their shows). They are my favorite American band for many reasons, and they inspire me for their empowering messages and the fact that they are not afraid to recreate themselves artistically and musically (and successfully done so). It's as if every album shows them peeling away the layers of what they are and what they do. They have that "madonna complex" as I like to call it, and they creatively bring it to their live performances.

It's only natural for me to want to blog about my experiences when they come back to the midwest while photographing them live. It's the next step, but they go hand in hand. They are, by far, the best band to photograph and see live in concert these days. It doesn't matter if you're a long time fan or you're going to one of their shows for the first time. It's an experience all its own, and each time I've seen them it's a different experience. The words come flowing to paint a picture of their enthusiasm and talent, and the photos preserve the moments that make you wish you could've been there to see it for yourself! I don't mind blogging for their St. Louis or Kansas City, or both! If you're going to both shows, I'll see you there!

(Prologue Note: So I'm back from the dead for the moment. At this rate, it's only April and I've had 2 surgeries on my neck in the past month (which I'll get into later). While being basically sick from the spinal injections earlier this year and determining what would happen, I wasn't exactly motivated to write a blog about inspiration. I was inspired, but not inspired enough, and I'm not going to fraud my way around Buzznet just to get featured if I'm not feeling it while writing it. Am I making sense? Good, hopefully. I'm always open to new and inspirational sources, so if you have one to suggest, feel free to contact me here, on facebook, or on twitter. I'm all over, and even when I'm sick, I'm still listening. So even if this blog series were to end, I would tell you. Onto the adventures....)

1. April 12th is AVIVA'S BIRTHDAY!!

April 12th is your editor-in-chief at buzznet's birthday! you best wish Aviva a happy one or I shall claim your souls! Mwhaha! No, but seriously, this woman inspires me. Call me an asskisser, but I don't give a f***. She really does. Not only is her hair boss (you should see it curly too! Smokin'!), but her encouraging and positive personality are quite a huge inspiration on some of my concert photography and art. She's smart, funny, and amazing. Thank you, Veevs, for all your wonderful contributions to buzznet, your awesome sense of humor, and being YOU! Happy birthday!

THIS woman's hair and everything! Tell me she's not amazing and I'll show you an angry redhead!

2. "Sacred Earth" movie

So I've decided, along with a close friend of mine, to take a road trip this late summer/early fall to the southwest. Namely, what is known as "The Four Corners", where Arizona, Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico meet. Our first stop is Mesa Verde (look it up-it's astounding and intriguing) and onto such places as Monument Valley, Island In The Sky, and if we're brave enough, False Kiva. Apparently False Kiva's not even geographically located on a map and is dangerous to get to, but we'll see. This all leads up to this movie which my friend introduced me to after we'd decided to go to the enchanted American Southwest. Directed by Jan Nickman, this movie makes you feel its landscapes rather than your basic narrated documentary. Watch the breathtaking trailer and go to sacredearthmovie.com for more.

3. "Creative Is A Verb" by Patti Digh

"Fear is the reason for making art. It is a means to freedom." - Ilya Kabakov

This is one of the many quotes you'll see in "Creative Is A Verb" by Patti Digh, a book that is a means to awakening the creative spirit within you by LETTING GO (what a concept!). She does this by covering the 6 creativity killers (or aka excuses we use as adults to not open ourselves to creativity. I even found myself doing this a while back in 2009, and it scared the hell out of me, so I figured I'd grab a copy of this as a reference guide to never letting the 'creative block' control me). Her award winning blog, 37days.com, asks the question: What would you do if you only had 37 days left to live? What would you create in order to leave your legacy with friends and loved ones? What would you be doing today? Basically, start flinging that paint onto a canvas or scribbling on paper. You don't have to have professional-grade materials to be a creative person. Just go for it and don't focus too much on the details. It's for everyone: the professional artist, the artist who's looking to expand their creativity levels, and those who think they aren't artistic or aren't creative. It's for anyone and everyone. Also, check out her retreats that are available to sign up for on her blog.

4. Artist Holten Rower's "Tall" Paintings

So what would happen if you got all your friends together and had several gallons of different colored paints and just started to pour them down a few boxes you glued together or large wooden block? It'd probably end up looking like something similar to this ultra cool "tall painting" montage. Holten Rower, a New York based artist, designed this type of painting and you may find it quite hypnotizing to watch. What intrigues me is what type of paint it is. My guess would be acrylic with some paint thinner so it doesn't dry up so fast. Either way, take a look at this clip and tell me you're not inspired! Whoever says they don't have a creative bone in their body now has a solution!

5. Appreciating Good Health from 2 surgeries & Shooting MCR in Seattle!

Like my scar?

'WHAT? What the hell is she talking about?' you might be saying to yourself? Yep, welcome to my bizarre month (or rather a truly bizarre year so far). Let me clarify this though as briefly as I can. As some of you know, I live in chronic pain due to neurological issues regarding my neck and back. In 3 years, I've had 4 surgeries, and 2 of the most recent have occurred within the last month. I had surgery on March 10th where they'd implanted 2 wires down my spinal chord and a battery to activate a stimulator in order to manage the chronic pain. I carry a programmer that looks a lot like what an iPod would've looked like had Apple designed in it the early 90's.

Shooting MCR live in Seattle (can you find Donna and me - psst here's a clue: Donna is shooting Gerard; I'm shooting Mikey). Photo courtesy of Danielle from KissFM in Seattle by permission.

The bright side of this is that I was able to photograph My Chemical Romance once again in Seattle, and meet the lovely Donna James of Jussi James Photography. She is a gem! Her photos were amazing and she is just as amazing. It was great fun shooting My Chem as always and I feel very blessed for being able to photograph them 3 times already. Unfortunately after an amazing concert, I injured myself before having to fly home to St. Louis the next day. I'd found out by way of the ER X-rays that I'd accidentally ripped out one of the wires that was implanted in the muscles. Thus, this led to emergency surgery and I was back in the hospital about a week ago. What does this all mean in terms of inspiration?

1. You appreciate the little things when you're in the hospital when you're either not in pain or puking in your own hair (yep, that happened too, and brought back memories of my college years-not cool). You appreciate when you have a great nurse who actually cares about your well being, the sunshine, the ability to walk, the blessing of having friends and family who love you and care about you (thank you, Donna, for your kindness and generousity once again for letting me hang out! I can't wait to visit you again). You appreciate being in good health and feeling good.

2. Good hospital food. It actually has come a long way much in the way airline food has gotten better, thankfully. It's like when you get over the flu finally and get your appetite back again.

3. The ability to look at the bright side of things, slow down, and relax. I'm going to practice what I preach this time. However, just to clarify, it wasn't the MCR show that caused the injury. I hung out in the distance and watched the show sans being inside the crowd. I don't do moshing anymore, obviously. It happened after the show when I picked up my camera bag which of course could've happened at any given time or place.

Fun fun fun! I encourage everyone to get their own creative art nights going on. Keeps you out of trouble and it's good for the soul! P.s. Those of you who are babysitters or have kids, I encourage it even more! Kids are naturally artists and who doesn't love to have fun and get messy in that crafty, creative way?!

So this should keep you preoccupied until my next entry full of inspirational sources. It's my plan to do so as much as possible, health and life permitting. Most importantly, I hope it makes an impact and goes beyond the realm of whether or not your favorite actor or musician should be chastised for doing something "controversial". ;) XOXO Jane

I know I've been a bit inactive over the past couple of weeks on buzznet and forgive me, there's good reason for that. I'll explain in brief in the "Inspiring Things" blog that's coming up. As for now, I've entered a contest on brickfish.com called "Show Us Your Best Facial Feature". I'd certainly appreciate your vote. You can vote every 12 hours, and all I ask is that you click that vote button as many times as you like when you can. Special thanks to Bree for posting the link to facebook and Aviva for her support in passing the word on!

If I win, I'll send your favorite band to your house to personally put on concert for you and your friends (but not really). However, you will have my gratitude and maybe if I win I can show it by reaching into the deep archives of my concert photography and post some formerly unpublished photos.

1. Live "Gluing" Artist Michael Raivard

If you're looking for a truly interesting and one-of-a-kind experience in art, check out French-based artist Michael Raivard. Thinking outside the box, Raivard discovered how he could take "speed painting" to the next level, using glue and sparkles (eat your heart out, Ed Cullen). Sounds too good to be true? Check out the clip below- he creates a portrait right before our eyes in less than 3 minutes! I'm truly amazed by this and I think you will be too. For more info on Michael, go to his official website, michael-raivard.com

2. Creative freedom with SARK's amazing collection of books.

If you don't know who author SARK (Susan Ariel Rainbow Kennedy) is, you certainly should. If you've ever wanted to let go of any creative inhibition and discover your inner artist by knowing yourself better, her books are the way to go. She covers just about any and every topic imaginable in thinking differently and in a positive, realistic manner. Everything from creativity, money, sexuality, work, family, healing (from any type of abuse or addiction and beyond). You name it, it's there.

It's hard to choose a favorite Sark book, but some of my favorite titles are featured in the above photo of the book's covers. Her books and her outlook on life are like a breath of fresh air and will inspire you to pursue your own dreams without the fear of judgement from others and then some. Most of her books are handwritten and all the cover art and artwork within (and there's A LOT of it) are done by her.

SARK is an incest survivor, an artist, author, and a true inspiration for women and men of all ages.

3. The 'Gates' Of Hell

Author Troy Taylor wrote about "The Gates" in his Weird Illinois book, not are to be confused with The Gates of Hell from New Jersey.

I know what you're thinking... "What? The Gates of Hell?" Well, they're not really gates, and I certainly don't think anything related to evil is awesome. I think what I find inspiring though is the accumulation of graffiti these 'gates' have obtained over the years. The gates are actually railroad trussels that were built long before roads were paved and they have collected many stories and folklore surrounding them due to their location. They begin on Lebanon Road in the outskirts of Collinsville, Illinois and continue through the surrounding towns of Troy, O'Fallon, and the Shiloh area.

The legend says that if you drive through all Seven Gates at midnight, reaching the final 7th 'gate' at the stroke of midnight, you're then transported to Hell. The story has strange twists to it, as if the person has to be skeptical in order for it to work and/or no one can drive through the gates twice or else it won't work.

The Gates are supposedly notorious for occult/satanic worship (probably just some kids being stupid), but also more dismal rumors exist. It's said that off of one of the roads following one of the final gates, there is a rumored, remote "death house," where apparently a family was murdered and sacrifices of animals and children were committed. I've never seen this house, but if anyone knows about it, tell me where I can find it.

Rumors of Hell Hounds (dogs guarding the gates with glowing red eyes) and paranormal activity are endless. It could all just be folklore. However, I don't doubt the stories of the mob dumping their victims' bodies there back in the 1930's and 40's. Collinsville was notorious for mobster activity back then, Frank "Buster" Wortman being one of the most popular mobsters in the Collinsville area at the time.

As I was snapping photographs of The 'Gates' Of Hell, I noticed how the further down the road into the bridges my friend and I got, the creepier they felt. It definitely has a desolate, dark vibe to it. However, I wasn't greeted by any hounds of hell, ghosts, or Satan worshippers. The last time I had visited the Gates, I was a teenager. My friends and I used to drive around out there at night because of its infamous reputation, just to see if we could scare the crap out of each other. How is it that a random place becomes the source of such oddball popularity? I kept thinking with all the folklore and strange feeling The Gates have surrounding them, that despite most of the it probably being a result of vivid imaginations, it must have some seeds of truth. I'll let you decide. Check out the entire gallery of shots I got of the gates here on Facebook.

4. "The Downward Spiral" by Nine Inch Nails

Gothy Trent is Gothy.

I was listening to my iTunes library on shuffle the other day while drawing when "A Warm Place" by Nine Inch Nails from the 1994 album "The Downward Spiral" started playing. I have to say, it rejuvenated my love for this album. I stopped my shuffle mode and listened to it in chronological order. It comes as no surprise and yet fascinates me that this nearly 17 year old album (released March 8, 1994) still sounds avant-garde and not outdated at all. I don't know of too many albums that are almost 20 years old that you can say that about.

The first time I listened to the album at the age of 15 it terrified me. Why? I had never heard music composed quite like that of such beautiful noise, not to mention with such raw and emotional lyrics. It isn't for the faint of heart (or ears). It isn't your happy-go-lucky, carefree album by any means. However, I fell in love with the album and it became one of my favorites of all time.

Recorded while living in the house Sharon Tate lived in (who was brutally murdered by the Charles Manson 'family' - R.I.P.), the concept record has an underlying story of a man who strips himself of everything until he has no more, and he becomes suicidal. Hence, "The Downward Spiral." However, with the bit of hope towards the end of the record with "Hurt", there is a message of starting over and beginning again. That is the most important message of the album itself. If you've never listened to this bleak and beautiful album, I'd advise you not to take it too literally and listen with open ears. You can listen to the album via ArtistDirect.com online.

5. My "Creativity Book" Entries of the Week

Forgive me for not having more, but every day last week I had either a doctor, dentist, or neurologist appointment. I'm not sure how that happened (yes, aside from a dry socket from a pulled tooth, I'm fine...you don't need to hear about my medical drama). Anywho, this isn't to say I inspire myself, but I'm putting these out there to document the creativity book that I created! The first one was created on an "art night" I had with a good friend of mine:

"Eternal Landscape" (Prismacolor, watercolor, and colored ink on paper) 1.1.2011. This one isn't my best at all. I think it's kinda crappy, but hey, I enjoyed using the watercolor and inks together. Bleeding colors are awesome.

Aquarian Goddess (Prismacolor and Decocolor gold paint pen on paper. Created 1.11.2011) I may or may not turn this into a large painting. We'll see...

Aah, it's a brand new year and a clean slate for all of us. I hope the holidays were not too brutal and hectic for you, but we can all breathe a sigh of relief that we survived them, no matter how both beautiful and chaotic they be. As usual, I've gotten sidetracked this past weekend in writing this week's inspiring blog installment, so I'm thinking mondays are the best days to post these. Let's face it: Mondays are mondays. They are what they are, and January can feel a bit bland after the initial high of the holidays. They don't have to be if you don't let them though. That's why I'm here; to boost your week with an injection of inspirational things around us involving the arts, artists, music, and more.

1. Food, Incorporated Documentary

I came across this documentary a while ago on Netflix and had put it in my instant queue a few weeks ago and just now watched it this past week. I think everyone should take and hour and a half of their life to watch this eye opening film about how the FDA controls what we eat and what's in our food. Now ignorance MAY BE bliss, but knowledge is power. I feel its better to be informed to make better choices when going to the supermarket than it is to make the wrong choices and end up putting pesticides and antibiotics inside your body. In addition, this documentary will make you not only aware of the process of how these genetically modified foods (including meats and poultry) are processed, but just how corrupt the justice system is about not wanting to make the American public aware of their operations. It'll teach you about how there are far less food inspections than there were 10-15 years ago and far more outbreaks of E. Coli and salmonella contamination, how far the corporate "big wigs" will go to cover up their operations, and so on. On the flipside of the coin, they do shed light on how everyone can make a difference as an individual in an effort to change how the government works in coordination with farmers, and even spoke to Stoneyfield Farms and other organic farmers who are making organic products available and more affordable to the general public. The official website for Food, Inc. is a goldmine of resources to other websites on how you can find healthier food in your local area and how small choices can make a huge difference in your health and in the industry. To find out more on where your food is coming from and the potential pesticides it has, go to Food And Water Watch.com.

Forget "high art". It's the lowbrow art that truly speaks to the down-to-earth viewers and the other outsiders in the world. This amazing documentary directed by Aaron Rose and Joshua Leonard focuses on a group of artists that were known for their do it yourself style of street art. However, this doesn't just cover their fine art. It covers their inspiration and their craft of graffiti, skateboarding, filmmaking, and photography. You name it, they did it. There are a series of interviews from all the artists and it's interesting to see their perspective, their influences, their skills and style, and what they found inspiring growing up. It also shows how interconnected they were personally as they worked amongst themselves even though each of them had a unique style all their own. The list of artists featured here you may or may not know, but you must see it for yourself whether you are an artist or an art lover:

Designed by yours truly on New Year's Eve 2010, I decided that this would kickstart my new year's resolution to get more in touch with creativity. So what is a creativity book? It's a book of no rules and no limits for yourself creatively. I had 2 blank, hardbound sketchbook similar to this one that I decided to personalize on the outside with a collage of paint, photos, and misc. items. Each day I'll try to make an installment of some medium or form of creativity for myself (and for others to view). What's great about creating one for yourself is that you don't have to make masterpieces on a daily basis. It's a project in exploration of discovering yourself artistically and creatively. I'm keeping a record via a facebook album or you can view it here. Let me know if you decide to make one for yourself!

4. Artist Margaret Killgallen

Everyone needs heroes, especially if you're an artist of any kind. I learned more about Margaret through the Beautiful Losers documentary. I'd recognized her work, which I'd seen before around the St. Louis exhibits. Her paintings were largely influenced by folk art, and her murals were focused on the dying art of the hand painted sign. Growing up, my father was a sign painter, and I saw how hand painted signs were taken over by digital technology. There's something very pure about her work, and I love that she incorporated a palette of warm colors into her work, and was also a train car graffiti artist. Unfortunately, she died all too young at the age of only 33 in 2001. She was diagnosed with breast cancer while simultaneously being pregnant. Doctors had told her she could receive treatment, but that she'd have to terminate her pregnancy, in which she refused to do. Being a mother myself, I can understand her choice and would've done the same. Thankfully, she gave birth to her beautiful daughter, Asha. Sadly, she passed away 3 weeks later. Her story and her robust contributions to the world of art will always live on in her memory. You can read further, watch footage, and see more of her art here in the Art21 series on PBS.

5. Photographing The Stars!

No, I'm not talking the kind of stars that walk down the red carpet and are full of themselves, either. The world has enough paparazzi photographers and I certainly have no interest in taking pictures of said subjects in all their pretentious glory. I'm talking about the kind of stars we take for granted until we're silent enough in our busy lifestyles to stop and appreciate them. I've been wanting to explore techniques to shoot constellations and other astronomical discoveries, but it wasn't until after watching The Phoenix Lights documentary (I'm on a documentary kick, what can I say?) for the 2nd time that it kicked me into doing just that instead of procrastination. I did some online research on photographing star trails (which is one of my goals to capture someday), and general settings for the best night photography. I grabbed my tripod after noticing that the constellation Orion was right outside my bedroom window in clear view, set the camera to "bulb" and ISO to 3200. This wasn't the best photography I'd ever done, but not bad for a first try. I've realized I need to rent a good remote with a timer to capture the lapse of time over a few hours to get a true, decent star trail photo. It'd probably also be a good idea not to photograph in the blistering cold with the window wide open. Until next time, we'll see how this develops further...have a great week everyone!

In my heart, this is #1 though for me personally. As you may have seen already, I was blessed with having the privilege of shooting my favorite band, MCR, twice in the same week. One show in Kansas City on December 8th and the next in St. Louis on December 14th. This is not to rub it into anyone's faces.
3. Roller Skating! (no, really)

My son had to attend a friend's birthday party last week, which was held at a local roller skating rink. Mind you, I hadn't been on skates since I was a kid in the '80's, but I always LOVED going to the skate corral with friends. Hearing some of the '80's classics blared over the speakers while skating again for the first time in years made it a truly nostalgic event. Within moments I was skating with confidence and helping my son (who wasn't so thrilled because no kid gets it right the first time they skate). This skating event has prompted me to look for a brand new pair of roller skates after being inspired by a simple skating party. There's something freeing and fun about being on skates. Hell, I may be 31, but I'm not taking a back seat to fun. My "tree years" are going to be some of the finest. You think 'Show Pony' (from the MCR video for 'Na Na Na' & who opened for their record release show) would take me on in a skate off?! He'd probably kick my ass, though! Hmmm....always had a dream of doing some roller derby someday. We'll see....

Hong Kong portrait artist Paul Lung has an incredible, rare talent of capturing detail in a hyper realistic way.

I stumbled across the amazing talent of Hong Kong artist from the Art Of Day website, and while I thought I was pretty damn good at graphite work, this guy's ability to capture realism and detail totally blow me off the map! His work is so incredibly realistic looking through the use of pencils that his art is known as "hyper realism", and for a good reason. The wrinkles, the hair, the skin and texture of clothes look so finely tuned and realistic that it's as if you can reach into the artwork and touch the subject. Check out the Art of Day's feature of 15 amazing portrait by Paul. You will be awestruck.
